Day 17 - Road Trip 2015

Yes, we stayed in WINSLOW, ARIZONA last night!
Road Trip Song
Take it Easy
By The Eagles
We took some cute pictures "standin' on the corner" before we headed out of town.

26 BAR RANCH
Do you know who the famous owner was?
JOHN WAYNE

We stopped by to see it today.  No tours.  It is a working Hereford ranch that is now owned by the Hopi Indians. We did not tell the kids where we were going but when we turned onto 26 Bar Road I asked Sterling if he knew who owned the 26 Bar Ranch and in 1 second flat he said John Wayne!  😃 He was disappointed that The Hopi Indians have not done more with it.  Me too!

Then we turned and headed East!!! Home bound!  It is bittersweet.
Everyone is ready EXCEPT me!!!  😩
The kids miss Nana, PawPaw, Bexar, Winston, Eddie and all Gattis animals A LOT!
Dan & I do too!
Maybe we can just load them all in the car and just keep driving!!! 😃

With all of the travel points checked off and "nothing to see"... bust out the electronics!!!
The kids got a lot of time on their electronics today...they were excited!
There have been VERY little electronics on this trip and it is great!

Tomorrow will be pretty exciting...but a major family dispute just might take place!
We got a call that our new lawn mower is in and we can pick it up tomorrow before 3pm.
Everybody in this car wants to be the first one to use it! 😍

I'll keep you posted!!!

ROAD TRIP SONG OF THE DAY
Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road
By Louden Wainwright III

Finally for Carson & Kenedy - they LOVE this song
We encountered the dead skunk right outside of Eagar, New Mexico - close to the 26 Bar Ranch.
If you have never heard this song PLEASE look it up!
It is hilarious!!!

Day 16 - Road Trip 2015

THE GRAND CANYON

We stayed in Beaver, Utah last night and just loved our little hotel and the restaurant.
The Best Western Plus & Crazy Cow Cafe!
The ladies there were so nice and just great to visit with!
A very nice and pleasant stay in a very small place in Utah :)

Found a Subway for lunch somewhere between Utah & Arizona.
Kenedy scored her last Inside Out bag! She collected them all on this road trip :) Disgust was the last one! Order of collection All characters, Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and then Disgust :)
This old German car was at the Subway too.  The driver came out and saw me taking pictures.  He shared with me that he is a journalist from Germany and is driving the car AROUND THE WORLD!  That makes "road trip" take on a whole new meaning!  He has a dash camera on the front that is filming the whole thing.  He will do a show when he returns to Germany.  The lady that owns the car was there too ...  riding in a very nice minivan!  HAHA!

We became "that tourist family" today.  We stopped on the side of the road at a "cool looking cave" and got suckered into a tourist trap.  Got some really cute glow in the dark pictures though!  HA!  The girls loved it! Took about 15 min and we were on the road again...

We picked Grand Canyon Village (South Rim) as our sight seeing spot.   It is just amazing!
God's perfect work! We would like to come back and do the overnight hike down to the bottom!
Stay a night on the Colorado River in The Grand Canyon...that would be awesome!
We saw some elk and a rabbit :)

Flagstaff is just gorgeous!  All of those pine trees reminded me of home...like Tyler, Texas home not Georgetown, Texas home!  HAHA!  I miss pine trees :)

Then we spotted the sign, laughed and said we have to stop! 😍

SIZZLER

Right there off the highway!  We all loved it!  Our kids will be watching for the next chance to stop!   Ha!  Kenedy could not get enough to of the "all you can eat" bar 😆

Now we are bedded down in a town for the night that you know of ... one not far from Flagstaff❓

Day 15 - Road Trip 2015

ALPINE SLIDE
GREAT SALT LAKE
TRAVEL

We did a little shopping this morning.  Jackson Hole has THE BEST toy store we have ever been to!  Teton Toys is amazing!  The kids went 4 times while we were in town!  Hit Starbucks ... which is strategically placed right next to Teton Toys! HAHA!
Then headed to the Alpine Slide!
It was great!  They are building a mountain coaster right next to it!
We will certainly give it a try next year!

We took in a lot more untouched areas of Wyoming, Idaho and Utah driving today!  Dan & I both considered it a blessing to see and know that people have not taken over everything!!!  🙏 We drove hundreds of miles seeing God's creations...and no other cars!
We saw a badger too!!
Backed up to get a better look...he was NOT happy.  He was really big and turned around and glared at us several times as he was making his get away.  He might have charged if we had been on foot!!

We ate lunch in Soda Springs, Idaho.
Cute little town!

We saw a lot of cattle country (with cows currently occupying).  Dan and I both noticed the same differences in land management.  Like those who are good stewards and those who over graze!  This happens back home too. The open range is really neat...no fences!

THE GREAT SALT LAKE

We got to see The Great Salt Lake!   Another amazing touch of God's hand!  It really is neat to read about it.  We read as much as we could when we had service.  We saw really cool salt deposits and LOTS of dead birds! Yikes!

With Dan's weather knowledge from being a pilot, he noticed and pointed out something really cool to us!  It is called virga. It is when the rain is falling from the clouds but it evaporates before it hits the ground.  It was really awesome to watch!  We drove for just a little bit just watching and then a rainbow formed.  Whoa!!  Yes, I got a picture 😃

I have really neglected talking about all of the wonderful people we have met.  I do apologize.  Of course, we have met some really nice people from all over.   We sat by a couple at lunch yesterday in Jackson Hole from Fredricksburg, Texas!! ❤️

It was a good travel day!

Day 14 - Road Trip 2015

SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS
JACKSON HOLE PLAYHOUSE
Our kids have always had a fondness for shows but tonight they I think they really got a taste of the best and are hooked!!
It just does not come any better than this play at this spot :)
I saw Seven Brides for Seven Brothers here on this stage 20 years ago with my Aunt Benny & Uncle Sam.  I was hooked too :)
It will be really hard to leave tomorrow.  The kids have loved being here (Dan & I too) and we really are already planning our trip back. There are 2 other things we did here on my trip 20 years ago that the kids want to do as well...so we will be back!!!
We spent the day walking around town.  Ate good food, enjoyed all the shops (especially the outfitter), art galleries, stage coach ride etc... Even got to swim before dinner and the show!
Another great day on the road!
Only four days left...we are not ready for it to end!

Day 13 - Road Trip 2015

YELLOWSTONE
NATIONAL PARK

The kids enjoyed one more nice & cool morning playing in front of our cabin in Cody, Wyoming.  We had a WONDERFUL breakfast at The Irma Hotel!
We will miss Cody, Wyoming!

We headed West and took in a few more sights named after Buffalo Bill Cody.  We have just about finished the circle of all of the places that Buffalo Bill built, owned, and brought to life.  Even his final resting place in Golden, Colorado.  He was a remarkable and fascinating man.  The Buffalo Bill Dam was really neat and not something that was on our radar.

That is about the time "No Service" hit our phones and we did not get service again until we came out of The Grand Tetons National Park and headed into Jackson Hole, Wyoming!
Pretty awesome!

WOW!
NOT SURE THERE ARE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK!
God really did show off on the day he formed this place.  We entered thru the East Gate and took the North Loop around and came out the south gate to Jackson Hole.  We spent almost all day in the park!  We took in just about every inch...but we need way more time to feel fully satisfied!

OLD FAITHFUL GEYSER

We literally drove up and parked, walked up and found our spots, waited about 15 min and BOOM she went off!!  WHOA...Totally amazing! We had ice cream at the Historic Old Faithful Inn.  Our plan would be to go back and stay there for a week or more!!!

Then as if Yellowstone wasn't enough.
We drive out and what do we see...

THE GRAND TETONS!!!

Really the most amazing mountains ever!
A plane was flying in and brought back good memories from when I was in Jackson Hole...20 years ago!  Boy has it grown!!!

Checked into our hotel and walked around a bit.  Found a little Mexican food for dinner and we are calling it a night!

We saw a lot of buffalo today.
BUT
We REALLY want to see a bear! :)

Day 12 - Road Trip 2015

BUFFALO BILL CENTER OF THE WEST

This is by far the BEST museum on the planet!  Seriously...the most amazing museum ever!

If all museums were as interactive and engaging as this museum they would all be full of happy kids every day!!!  It holds a wealth of knowledge that really requires more than one day but we did it all ... today!  Whoa! None of our kids ever asked to leave!  Not even once!   It was hunger that took over my body and I finally said time to go.  Yes, we could have eaten there (food looked great) but then I knew we would never leave!!! Haha!!  We still had more to do in Cody 😃

Walked Main Street, ate a great late lunch, shopped, swimming then RODEO time!!!

CODY STAMPEDE RODEO
THE RODEO CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
CODY, WYOMING

There is nothing better than a rodeo for this family...except one in the mountains and outside!!!
It was decided that this was the best one yet for our family 😃
Favorite event of the night was the bull riding.  The clowns really got to do their job tonight and what a fun time it was!  The girls got to sit on Mongo the Bull.  Sterling rode a mechanical bull.  All 3 did the calf scramble.  Kenedy got her picture with the clowns!  One of them is from Salado, Texas! LOADS and LOADS OF FUN!!!

Thankfully our Godkids reminded us that today was National Ice Cream Sunday!
Thank you Barrett, Bella & Marshall
Left the rodeo and had ice cream on the way back to our cabin! Yummy!

Day 11 - Road Trip 2015

BARTLETT RANCH
WYOMING

We were blessed with the amazing opportunity to spend time with Woody Bartlett at his Wyoming ranch today. 80,000 acres!!!
Yes, I typed it right...80,000 acres!!!
Alabama Ranch is 5000 acres and Texas Ranch is 1100.
WOW!
Bob is Dr. Bartlett's 11 week old puppy!
The kids wanted to bring the puppy home :)
We saw lots of great horses and some of them will love to live in Jonah, Texas with the Gattis Family :)

If you have some time read about Dr. Bartlett
www.bartlettranch.com

You will understand why this is such a special opportunity.
What his website does not mention is that at the new Equine Center at TAMU you will find inside The Bartlett Recognition Hall.  We are very thankful for his contributions to TAMU...He is an Auburn grad :)

We left there and had lunch in
Chugwater, Wyoming at The Soda Fountain!
It was GREAT!!!

Made our way to Cody, Wyoming.
Hit the local Pizzaria and are calling it a day!
I think we will all dream about horses tonight!

Day 10 - Road Trip 2015

RED ROCKS AND A
BLAST FROM THE PAST

We headed out of the big city again today and went to the
Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre.
Some day we will have to take in a family concert there.
It is really awesome!  We hiked for a bit and then headed into the town of Morrison.  Another cute small town in Colorado!  We walked thru town had milk shakes then headed to...

The Bucksnort Saloon
Pine, Colorado

I have some of the fondest memories of my life from the summer I lived in the mountains right down from from this little saloon & restaurant.  I learned so much about living, myself and God's plan for my life.  It was an amazing summer.  I am so thankful I could bring my kids back to see a place that I talk so fondly of to this day.  I wish we could have spent time at my camp.
Maybe next time :)

Daddy finished up all of his meetings
and surprised us with a great & fun dinner at
The Buckhorn Exchange

This historical little gem is a must if you ever getup this way!
We will always remember this place for the dead animals all over the place (looks like The Dixie Chicken x 10), the great food and the place our kids decided to learn to wiggle their ears! :)
Daddy demonstrated that he can wiggle his ears and now the kids HAVE to master it!

We are heading out early in the morning for La Grange, Wyoming.  I'll give you one guess what we are going to look at...

Nope!  Not cows...

Day 9 - Road Trip 2015

IT IS 1/2 WAY DAY!!!

BITTERSWEET!
WE MISS OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY
BUT SURE LOVE LIVING ON THE ROAD AND SEEING ALL THAT GOD HAS MADE!

These country bumpkins had to get out of the city today!
24 hours was enough :)
We headed out to Idaho Springs, Colorado for the day and just loved it!
We toured The Argo Gold Mine & Mill.
Turns out the gold rush began right in Idaho Springs!
The tour was great, we panned for gold and gems and enjoyed the adorable little town.
Beaujo's Pizza had the best pizza ever!  We really enjoyed our day!
Daddy had meeting all day ... he said they were great!

We had dinner tonight with all of the folks at the cattle convention that are here from Texas!
Ruth's Chris hosted and it was great!
Everyone in the entire group had steak...hehe!
Any chicken eaters might have been sent home!!
You know chickens are really just for eggs :)

Day 7 - Road Trip 2015

MADE IT TO COLORADO TODAY

We slept in a little this morning had a good breakfast and hit the road for Colorado!

We saw this really cool Lincoln Monument on the Lincoln Highway between Laramie & Cheyenne.  It is literally right off the highway.
We stopped in Cheyenne to see one of the 8 Big Boy Locomotives on display in the USA
Stopped by the The House of 2000 Companies...it is no longer there!  Boo!
It is now a marketing business now that is getting a lot of traffic from people wanting to see
The House of 2000 Companies 😃
The lady was really nice and had a cute dog!  To bad it is not there any more...

Boulder, CO
We hiked the Flatirons!

There are a group of guys from the college that run up to the top and back everyday!  IN 45 MINUTES!!   Whoa...they past us on our way down.   We had a nice visit with Scott, The Park Ranger, he knew the guys by name when they came RUNNING down the trail.  I think if I lived here I could hike the Flatirons everyday....running?  No thank you!

Staying in Denver near the airport tonight!
We pick up Daddy at 7am
🎉🎉🎉WOOHOO🎉🎉🎉

The National Cattleman's Beef Association Summer Conference is in Denver.
We will be here until Saturday!
Then Daddy gets to go on the road with us! 🙏

Day 6 - Road Trip 2015

MORE GREAT SIGHTS AND TRAVEL TIME!!!

We took The 1880 Train Ride from Keystone, SD to Hill City, SD.  It was really neat!   We loved the open train cars!   We spotted a few places that we thought we take up residence... haha!
Said good bye to our favorite little town in South Dakota (Keystone) and headed to see the Crazy Horse Memorial Monument.

Wow!  I highly recommend that you take the time to go in and watch the video about the making of the Crazy Horse Monument.  We almost skipped it and it would have been a disservice to the memorial to have left with out understanding it.

"They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they kept one; they promised to take our land, and they did." - Red Cloud

Then hours on the road to Laramie, Wyoming!

We have come to the conclusion that we could be a mountain family!
I have a feeling much much more time will be spent in the mountains ... long stretches of time!  Maybe we should just load up the whole ranch and head North West 😃

Day 5 - Road Trip 2015

AMAZING and AWESOME
HAPPY SUNDAY

WOW!  If you ever get the chance to come to South Dakota...COME!!!

We started the day at the Black Hills Bagel Shop.  Kenedy had never had a bagel and was not overly excited to try them.  Tonight, on the phone with Daddy she proclaimed her new found love for bagels :) We had the best bagels ever!
The coffee could give Starbucks a run for their money!!
Great start to the day 😋

Good thing we had a great breakfast because we needed it at the Black Hills Maze!
It took us an hour for all 4 of us to get our cards stamped.
Probably the slowest family ever!!! HAHA!  😆

Bear Country USA has to be the best animal enclosure in the USA!  Especially for bears!  We could have watched these bears all day!   Just AMAZING!  The big Pooh Bear was our favorite.  You will know which one I am talking about when you see him in the pictures!
He was very entertaining :)

Mount Rushmore...WOW!!  It really was breath taking!  We loved the hike up to the top and reading about the Hall of Records.  Then, we came back to watch the lights come on at night! Words do not do it justice!
I took an amazing video that I will try to post at some point.
The internet is not the best at our hotel tonight.
We are literally 2 minutes from Mount Rushmore!!
Slow internet is a small price to pay for what we have been blessed to experience today!
The local pizzaria here in Keystone, South Dakota is GREAT!!!
It is called Pie for the People :)
It ranks right up there with great the pizza we had last summer in Washington DC :)
We met a really neat couple in Hill City today.  You will see them in our pictures with their dog Doc.  They are from New York traveling to California.  Their trip is for 2 MONTHS!!!  Whoa...
My kids said they are game for 2 months or a whole summer if Daddy & Bexar are with us!!!
Daddy says that would be awesome!  WOOHOO!!
I will keep you posted when we head out...hehe! :)

We have met so many nice people.
People from all over the world are such a great part of our travels!

God has blessed us in so many ways!!

Day 4 - Road Trip 2015

Highway!
Lots of open highway ... I love it when we get to see God's ultimate creation!
Gorgeous open country.

We made it to The Mount Rushmore State.  We haven't seen it yet but we are here :)
We have seen and grown very fond of prairie dogs!

We saw an old prairie homestead and all I have to say is I sure wish I could buy 160 acres for $18.00!!  Whoa...how awesome :)  Of course, the kids loved the animals...pony, goats & chickens! Ha!  I love that they love seeing animals like they have never seen any before.  We have 13 horses and they went nuts over the little pony named Polly.  We have 9 chickens and they just had to go in the chicken coop and hold the chickens.  This makes me smile!!  A simple life is a good life :)

Wall Drug Store was just awesome!  We ate a late lunch and hit the soda fountain for a malt on our way to Sturgis...

We made it to Sturgis in a flash from Wall.  I found a great trading post to stop at.  Pulled up in amongst all the motor bikes and Sterling announces "Umm ... this is a saloon." Yikes...we had to leave! HA!  Took a picture of "Sturgis" on the side of the mountain and Carson announces "It is just like Hollywood!"  BAHAHA!  Yes, just like that :)  It was time to move on down the road!  Although, I did see a sign that said "Rally Help Wanted - apply with in"  I almost filled out an application!!! giggle, giggle!!!

Now we are enjoying room service and catching up on a few episodes of Heartland!
The Gattis Family - everyone of us - LOVES this show!!  We are very thankful for Netflix :)

Day 3 - Road Trip 2015

Deputy of Dodge City

Newly was a gunsmith in Dodge City and a deputy when they needed him.
Today my kids became deputies! Hehe!
We are so glad we made it to the Boot Hill Museum this morning!
Buck Taylor starred in and was the narrator for the video and again the Gattis kids were thrilled to see Newly!  It just makes me smile that they love him like he is our neighbor. :)
One of our favorite Buck Taylor prints hangs in The Long Branch Saloon.
Some day I hope we have that print hanging in our house!  We had A LOT of fun!

We saw gorgeous sunflower fields in Kansas!
They were the big sunflowers like the ones you see in flower arrangements.

We saw massive feed lots!
Kenedy kept saying Y'ALL ARE GONERS! Bahahaha!!
These lots covered acres and acres.
I had to turn around and take a side road to just see how massive the one in Decatur County Kansas was.  I stood on the roof of my suburban and took a panoramic picture.
I could hear Kenedy again letting the cows know - Y'all are goners!  Cracked me up!
Our line at home when we smell cow poop is "I smell money!"
Well, we smelled a lot of money today :)

Then we topped a hill and there it was!!!
Zion Lutheran Church
It was the most precious church you have ever seen.
We stopped took some pictures, held hands and prayed!

We rolled into North Platte, Nebraska and headed to Buffalo Bills Ranch.  Wow!  It was gorgeous.  The kids said if we could have a ranch like that then they would moved to Nebraska.  Whoa...
We knew about Buffalo Bill's ranch called Scouts Rest Ranch from our visit to his grave site and museum in Golden, Colorado a few years ago.

One thing Kansas & Nebraska have in common is the speed limit thru town...small towns.
And on our drive all of the towns were small :)
Try 20mph!!!
At first I thought man that is slow ... wonder what happened in this town.
Then...4 more times!  I just wonder what the speed limit is in the school zone!

We topped the day off eating BEEF!  Hehe! :)
It is whats for dinner!  Y'all are goners :)

Day 2 - Road Trip 2015

GET YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66

We saw "The Largest Mound in the World" in OKC (who new) and then headed West!

We did get our kicks on Route 66!  We stopped by Lucille's Famous Gas Station and then to the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, OK.   It was really awesome!  Small but full of great information - not very time consuming.

We hit Dodge City, Kansas in time to burn off lots of energy in the pool!

We are all big Gunsmoke fans at our house so it is only fitting that we are here.
A few years ago at the Ft Worth Stock Show & Rodeo an announcement was made that Buck Taylor was in the audience.  Sterling quickly proclaimed, "That is Newly!!".
Later, we all met Buck Taylor (Newly) and had pictures made.
He was impressed that our kids knew who he was on their own accord.

Hardly a day goes by without an episode of Gunsmoke running in our house.   We love it!
We even have a yearling filly (one year old girl horse) named Miss Kitty and a new colt (baby boy horse) named Matt.

We have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Taylor a few times since then and every time it feels like we are meeting the Queen of England!!!  Haha!!! He is a wonderful man and an amazing western artist.

We plan to visit the museum here on our way out of town tomorrow...handing to Nebraska!

I bet you have a particular song in mind for our road trip song of the day....Route 66??
Sorry to disappoint but the drive really brought on a different tune.

Day 1 - Road Trip 2015

And we are off ... LIKE A HERD OF TURTLES!!

My Dad use to say this so many times growing up.
Every time I say it my kids laugh.  I think they are starting to get it.
I35 North = Herd of turtles! Haha!
Even moving in slow motion we are right on schedule!
Our goal was to go to the only drive-in movie theater in Oklahoma City and we made it!!
We saw Inside Out (great movie)!  The girls had already seen it with Nana but certainly did not mind seeing it again and we all really loved the drive-in.

The last movie I saw at the drive-in was Footloose!  Whoa...
On our way, we stopped in West ( of course)!  The kolaches are always AMAZING!!! We stopped in Frisco to see one of eight Big Boy Locomotives on display in the USA.  We saw it thru the fence kinda behind another train...they offered to give us a walking tour tomorrow at 11am.  I had to tell John sorry we will be in Kansas tomorow!  He laughed :) We saw a VW bug transformed into a spider in Lexington, OK.  It was built by Leroy Wilson in 1979.  We checked into our hotel and headed to the drive-in.  Oh and had ice cream at Braums'! :)
We are now the family on vacation that has a selfie stick and uses it.
Dan got it from some kids from China that toured our ranch.  It is awesome!

The last time I stayed in OKC was 2 days before the OKC bombing.  I was a flight attendant with Continental at the time and stayed about a block away from the sight.  Wow!
Seems like a life time ago...

Eddie

We want everyone to meet Eddie!
He is so very special to us.

He was born on April 1, 2015 to Lady X Eddie.

Lady coliced shortly before Eddie turned 2 months old.  She had emergency surgery and our fabulous vets did everything possible to save her for 2 weeks.
She passed away on June 12 and Eddie came home to us!
It was a very bittersweet day.

Eddie is so sweet and is now trained to be a dog.
He is doing great and growing like a weed!

We gained two more new foals this year Matt & Sis.
We now have a total of 13 horses!!  I have stopped counting cows...

PawPaw has started construction on the horse barn.  The kids are thrilled that they can get to it in about 2 minutes...3 if they are running slow!
Life is good!
